Later that day, Stockton telephoned his girlfriend.

“They were out here,” he said.

She asked Stockton if the Wells plot and Roden’s murder were related.

“Yes,” he said.

Stockton said Rothstein had told him that Rothstein was involved in the “tower site” incident and “all that shit” around Rothstein’s house.

The next day, July 20, 2005, Clark, Wick and Gluth interviewed Stockton again. He repeated what he had said in the phone conversation with K.W. He also said Diehl-Armstrong would leave messages on Rothstein’s answering machine, saying Roden was a problem “that needed taken care of.”

Stockton did not go further, and he did not implicate himself. But Clark, Wick and Gluth left the second interview feeling they had connected with Stockton, who was unpredictable in what he would say and when. The investigators believed he would be willing to talk more later.

Stockton seemed impressed.

In a parting gesture, he called Wick “a pit bull with a heart.” He called Clark “a devil in sheep’s clothing.”
